In the beginning, Nicole seems to fetishize Carlos’s race before falling in love with him, hooking up with a guy she knows will push her father to the edge. Yet in their presentation within a love story, these themes are successful in laying both Nicole and Carlos’ distinct circumstances on the table as they intersect and allowing the viewer to shade in the nuance where necessary. In some regards, it’s non-committal to any singular subject and makes few judgments or statements about them. The film flirts with topics like mental health, white privilege and racial profiling, though doesn’t explore further than the surface. But it’s worth commending a well-made film (a Disney film, no less!), with excellent and unsung performances from Dunst and Hernandez, for giving the hollow early aughts teen romance genre some depth. It’s not a novel premise: The mismatched Romeo and Juliet attempting to reconcile their forbidden, wrong-side-of-the-tracks attraction amid a world tearing them apart. When Nicole meets classmate Carlos Nuñez (Jay Hernandez) while completing community service, her fine-tuned act of defiance crumbles into an unmanageable and unavoidable pile of tough love. As the daughter of a congressman, she’s had everything she’s ever rejected handed to her.

A number of unexpected movies slyly fall under the Disney umbrella from company’s various (and mostly now-defunct) offshoots, and they tend to tell a broader history of Disney’s storytelling than its biggest blockbustersĬrazy/Beautiful comes from director John Stockwell, who also helmed the early aughts romps Blue Crush and Into the Blue, and stars Dunst as troubled teen Nicole Oakley. But Crazy/Beautiful, which is now as old as Kirsten Dunst was when she made it, has an unusual Disney connection. Sure, the film probably isn’t as memorable as the cheerleading or superhero movies that effectively made her a household name. The Golden Globe-nominated child star has since evolved to earn the kind of acclaim and respect she’d always deserved, the kind she should have gotten for 2001’s Crazy/Beautiful.

You wouldn’t expect Crazy/Beautiful, which starred Kirsten Dunst as a troubled teen, to come from Disney, much less be one of its best throwback movies.Ībout a decade ago, Kirsten Dunst was the ultimate teen movie star, headlining now-classics like Bring It On and the original Spider-Man trilogy alongside arthouse fare from the likes of Sofia Coppola.
